Lewis Hamilton: “That record of mine is not important”

Lewis Hamilton has won at least one race in every season he has competed in F1 but he says keeping that record is not important.

Only in 2013, his first year with Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton only managed to win one race, but in all other seasons he was at the party more than once. This season, however, time is running out because with six races to go, Hamilton’s counter is still at zero.

Mercedes has missed the mark with the design of the W13 and they are not really involved for the time being. Compared to the start of the season, they have made noticeable progress at Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton has not yet given up hope of a victory, but he emphasizes that maintaining his record is of no importance.

“I’m grateful that we’ve had a chance to win every year since 2007,” he said.

“I really believe we have a chance this year, there are still a few races to go. And that’s definitely a big goal for us as a team, to get back up front and fight for the lead.”

He has to share the record for longest series of seasons with a win with Michael Schumacher, both of whom have won a race for fifteen seasons in a row.

“I’m not focused on the record, but of course I’m trying to get that win this year,” said Hamilton. “But the record isn’t important to me, just because I don’t really care about records in general.”

It has already become apparent this season that Mercedes is struggling this season on the circuits where power plays a major role. With the Singapore GP as the next race on the program, Mercedes would have a greater chance of success on paper, but Hamilton remains cautious.

“I have no idea what our car is good for,” he said. “It was a surprise when we got into the car, and the car felt so much better than in Spa, and completely different from the previous weekend.

“But I hope it feels more like in Budapest and Zandvoort in the rest of the races.”
