This Abarth 500e drives electrically but still makes a lot of noise

When Abarth also announced that it would become an electric brand, we thought for a moment: how? Because you can hear an Abarth coming from afar due to its growling engine sound, while you often only notice an electric car when it knocks you over, so to speak. But the new electric Abarth 500e proves otherwise. Good thing, too!

Thanks to a special sound generator, the Abarth 500e sounds just as legendary as previous Abarth models, Abarth promises. The sound generator must provide an unmistakable Abarth roar. Fortunately, because a buzzing Abarth? To be honest, we shouldn’t think about it. The sound generator is standard on the extra fully equipped Abarth 500e Scorpionissima (try saying that three times in a row). It costs 44,000 euros as a three-door hatchback. Those who occasionally want to drive open to enjoy the engine sound extra will pay 3000 euros more. Then you get the Abarth 500e with a folding roof.

Sounds like?

The standard sound of the Abarth 500e is that of a guitar. Yes, you read that right, a guitar. A plucking guitar above 20 km / h if we have to believe the accompanying press release. Why you would want that is a mystery to us, but the sound must strike a chord with the occupants, according to Abarth (it really is there). We would equip the Abarth 500e with the sound generator described above and store the plucking guitar in its case anyway. On Abarth.nl you can listen to how the Abarth 500e with sound generator sounds.

Superlatives

The press release that Abarth has sent out about the new Abarth 500e is almost bursting at the seams with superlatives. It’s all very thick on top. As if Abarth also realizes that electrification is a bit of a struggle with the racing history of the brand and is doing everything it can to convince others that this is not the case. We quote: “The new Abarth 500e is the most responsive and exciting Abarth ever in the city and the fastest and most fun to drive outside of it.” And: “The new Abarth 500e is the fastest accelerating and most exciting Abarth 500 ever and even surpasses the Abarth 695.”

Most powerful battery in the Fiat 500e

We keep it a little more concrete here than Abarth does. The new electric Abarth 500e is equipped with the most powerful battery in the Fiat 500e. It has a capacity of 42 kWh. The power of the Abarth 500e is 155 hp, considerably more than the 118 hp of the Fiat, but barely more than the 145 hp of the entry-level petrol model, the Abarth 595. The torque is 235 Nm. With the Abarth 500e, you can reach 100 km/h in seven seconds from a standstill.

Abarth 500e accelerates faster than Abarth 695

According to Abarth, the Abarth 500e is 50 percent faster than the Abarth 695 during the intermediate sprint from 20 to 40 km/h. From 40 to 60 km/h it beeps in 1.5 seconds, one second faster than its petrol brother. And from 60 km / h you are a second faster at 100 km / h with the electric Abarth than the 695. The differences are minimal, but still. The top speed of the Abarth 500e is still a guess, and also the weight of the car.

Abarth 500e laden

Charging the electric Abarth 500e with an 11 kW on-board charger is not as fast as its intermediate sprints, but it is anything but easy. The Abarth 500e is equipped with an 85 kW fast charger. This allows about 40 kilometers to be charged within five minutes. With fast charging, the battery of the Abarth 500e is charged to 80 percent of its maximum capacity in just 35 minutes.

Power surge for Abarth logo

The new Abarth 500e is currently only available as a limited Abarth 500e Scorpionissima. 1949 copies of this are built worldwide. That number refers to the year in which Abarth was founded. If you look closely, you will see the renewed Abarth logo on the car. The scorpion has received an electric shock and is now ‘electrified’. The beast marks the new era of Abarth. The prices of the other versions will be announced by Abarth.
