With this petrol car, Hyundai celebrates the success of the electric Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6

Hyundai never dared to take the beautiful Pony Coupé from 1974 into production. 48 years later, they are going to build it again, together with the now 84-year-old designer. But don’t get too excited…

The Hyundai Pony Coupé Concept dates back to 1974, when no one in the Netherlands had heard of Hyundai. The predecessor of the production Pony was designed by Italdesign Giugiaro and had a sharply drawn body with many glass surfaces. Without this car, the DeLorean would have had DMC12 out Back to the Future never exist…

In the end, little of that design remained. When Hyundai came to the Netherlands in 1978, we had to make do with a five-door hatchback, which you can safely call deadly boring. The coupé should have followed in 1981, but because of the economic crisis in the early eighties, the Koreans did not dare to put it into production.

Hyundai is sorry

What a missed opportunity, really. Hyundai seems to realize that more and more. In 2019, the Koreans already introduced the 45 Concept, which pointed the way to exciting retro-futuristic electric cars such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Hyundai Ioniq 6. Despite its modern design, this concept car also had design features of the Hyundai Pony Concept. In 2022, the Hyundai N Vision 74 was also a loving nod to the Pony Coupé.

In the spring of 2023, Hyundai will really come up with a remake of the Pony Coupé Concept. For this, the help of the designer himself, Giorgetto Giugiaro, was enlisted.

The master designer – who drew the first Volkswagen Golf and Fiat Panda, among other things – is now 84 years old. Looking back on a long and successful career is not an option for the Italian, because the remake of the Pony Coupé seems to be the start of a new collaboration. The Belgian Luc Donckerwolke, boss of the Hyundai designers, pointed this out emphatically. Although he says it in a somewhat veiled way: “This venture represents an intercultural exchange that could pave the way for more collaborations in the future.”

2023 Hyundai Pony Coupe

Why is Hyundai going to rebuild and not just blow the dust off the old Hyundai Pony Coupé Concept? The answer is simple: it no longer exists.

If you hope that Hyundai will still take the Pony Coupé into production, then we have to disappoint you. It will remain with a one-off remake in 2023.
